ALL THINGS VELVET

ALL THINGS VELVET

Pack away those linen maxi dresses and cotton tanks—it’s finally velvet season. This timeless fabric is one of our favorites for fall/winter and is easy to find in our thrift shops (both IRL and online). The plush, luxurious texture of velvet is essential for when cooler temperatures call for a little something special.

Here are a few tips for styling new-to-you velvet pieces this season:

DRESS IT UP (OR DOWN)

Velvet is of course iconic when it comes to holiday fits, adding instant glam, and often bedecked with jewel embellishments, lace accents, ruffles, or event a burn-velvet embossed pattern.

You don’t have to wait for a soiree invite to don velvet—bring that fancy feel to everyday dopamine dressing by pairing a velvet top with denim, a graphic t-shirt with velvet joggers, or a crop top with velvet mini skirt.

LAYER IT

Give your look a velvety finish to immediately achieve just the right balance of boujee and casual. Whether your look is lounge-y, business casual, or gala-ready, top it off with a velvet blazer, jacket, oversized scarf, or even velvet shoes–from mary janes to boots and beyond.

TRY AN UNEXPECTED HUE

Midnight black velvet may be the most common shade and is a total wardrobe staple, however you should keep an eye out for other fall/winter-ready colors. Rich, gem tone hues make even a simple velvet piece stand out.

OPT FOR VINTAGE

Velvet from decades past—the 1920s to 1970s—is often real silk velvet, not the poly of most of today’s velvet pieces. Vintage silk velvet has an immediately recognizable, unparalleled soft, decadent feel and is often lined with 100 percent smooth silk in a contrast color.
